Dave,
I never saw a retainer ring tool at the workshop and there are many
variations of slots and blind holes.
In theory, a too-tight ring will distort both sides of each lens and equal
amount and is therefore self-compensating. In practice, I have seen
astigmatic irregularity that was clearly caused by the ring being too tight.
Edmund Scientific has a number of tool configurations but they cost about
$34 each.
